The woman behind better sleep on the road

  • 8th March 2026

International Women’s Day is often about big achievements and bold headlines. But sometimes the most meaningful stories begin quietly - in a spare room, with an idea that simply makes sense.

Jonic began in a loft.

In 2006, our founder and Managing Director, Nicky, noticed something that many caravan and motorhome owners had accepted as “just the way it is.” Caravan beds were awkward shapes. Standard bed sheets did not fit properly. Fitted sheets slipped off in the night. Bedding bunched into corners. Sleep was compromised, and with it, the enjoyment of time away.

Nicky did not set out to build a manufacturing business. She simply saw a problem and decided to fix it.

She began shaping caravan bed sheets herself, cutting and sewing them in the loft of the family home. The aim was simple: make bedding that actually fits caravan and motorhome beds properly. No slipping corners. No wrestling with oversized fabric in a tight space. Just comfort that feels considered.

That attention to detail quickly resonated.

By October 2006, Jonic was exhibiting at The Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show at the NEC Birmingham. By December, the business had outgrown the loft and moved into its first manufacturing unit. What began as one woman solving a practical issue had become something far bigger.

Building more than bedding

As the business grew, so did Nicky’s ambition for what caravan and motorhome sleep could be.

In 2008, Jonic introduced its range of caravan mattresses and motorhome mattresses. This was a significant step. Caravan mattresses at the time were often basic foam designs, seen as functional rather than comfortable. Nicky believed that sleep on holiday should be just as restorative as sleep at home.

That belief still underpins everything Jonic does today.

Jonic caravan mattresses were designed to a domestic standard, offering proper support, durability and comfort. It was a bold move in a market that had historically accepted “good enough.” But Nicky has never been particularly interested in doing what has always been done.

In 2012, her work was recognised when she won Manufacturing Business Woman of the Year - a proud moment not just personally, but for the wider caravan and motorhome industry. Manufacturing has long been male dominated. Seeing a woman recognised for leadership and innovation in this space mattered.

A family business with strong foundations

What makes Jonic’s story especially fitting for International Women’s Day is that it has never been about ego or noise. It has always been about care.

Nicky remains hands-on as Managing Director. She is deeply involved in product development, customer experience and the direction of the business. If you visit the NEC show, there is a good chance you will see her on the stand, talking to customers directly.

And now, there is another chapter unfolding.

Her daughter Emma is learning alongside her, gradually stepping into the business and absorbing the knowledge that has been built over nearly two decades. It is not just about products. It is about standards. About listening to customers. About maintaining quality when it would be easier not to.

There is something quietly powerful about that.

International Women’s Day often highlights firsts and breakthroughs. But it is also about legacy. About women building businesses that last. About creating opportunities for the next generation.

From loft to market leader

Since those early days in 2006, Jonic has grown into a recognised leader in caravan and motorhome sleep.

There have been rebrands - in 2015, again in 2019, and most recently in 2024 with the launch of a new website designed to make choosing the right product simpler and more reassuring. But the core has remained the same.

Quality matters. Fit matters. Sleep matters.

The products are still handcrafted in the UK by a team of specialists. The focus is still on solving real problems for real people. The difference now is scale. What began with shaped sheets has expanded into mattresses, toppers and complete bedding solutions for caravan and motorhome owners across the country.

And through it all, Nicky has remained consistent in her belief: life is too short for a bad night’s sleep.

Why this story matters

On International Women’s Day, it feels right to pause and acknowledge that Jonic exists because one woman decided not to accept “that will do.”

She questioned why caravan bedding could not fit properly. She questioned why a motorhome mattress should be less comfortable than one at home. She questioned why sleep on holiday should be compromised.

Those questions built a business.

For many of our customers, comfort is not a luxury. It is about waking without back pain. About enjoying longer trips. About feeling at home in a caravan or motorhome, wherever it is parked.

If that resonates, you are part of this story too.

Today, Jonic continues to grow - not through hype or shortcuts, but through steady craftsmanship, thoughtful design and a genuine desire to improve everyday life on the road.
