Top tips for travelling safely in a motorhome with pets (especially in summer!)
Taking your four-legged friend on the road with you can be one of the best parts of travelling in a motorhome. Long walks in new places, evenings curled up together, and the joy of exploring the great outdoors together are all part of the good life.
But when the temperatures rise, it's important to make sure your pets are just as safe and comfortable as you are. After meeting so many of you and your pets in our showroom, we’ve gathered some brilliant travel tips straight from fellow animal lovers.
1. Plan pet-friendly stops
Not all campsites or service areas are equally welcoming to pets. Before setting off, look for pet-friendly campsites that offer space to walk, shaded areas, and ideally a bit of grass (not just gravel). Some campsites even have dog-wash stations or enclosed play areas.
2. Keep the air flowing
In warmer weather, your motorhome can heat up very quickly - just like a parked car. Always ensure there's plenty of ventilation, especially if you're stopped in the sun.
- Use roof vents, fans, or door screens to keep air circulating.
- Consider a cool mat or raised pet bed to keep pets off hot surfaces.
- Never leave pets alone in the van on hot days, even with the windows open.
- If you're using any cooling system, make sure it’s safe and pet-friendly.
3. Create a comfy space in your caravan just for them
Don’t forget your pet’s home comforts. Their usual bed or a well-worn toy can turn your motorhome into their happy place.
Your dog or cat needs their own relaxing space, too. Set up their spot near a shaded area with access to water, and away from doors so they're not disturbed too often.
4. Hydration is key
Always travel with extra water. On warmer days, pets lose moisture quickly - especially dogs, who don’t sweat and rely on panting to cool down.
- Bring collapsible bowls for quick access on walks or day trips.
- Add ice cubes to their water when it’s hot.
- Consider a pet water bottle with a built-in bowl for on-the-go drinks.
- Keep an eye out for locals who leave dog bowls of water out on the pavement – there are plenty to find around small villages, especially in the Lake District.
5. Stick to a routine (as much as you can)
Pets love routine, even when you’re on the road. Try to stick to regular feeding and walking times. It can help reduce stress, especially in a new environment.
That said, avoid long walks during the hottest part of the day. Early mornings and evenings are the best times for exercise in the warmer months.
6. Travel safely in your caravan or motorhome
Just like people, pets should be properly secured when the motorhome is in motion.
- Use a crash-tested seatbelt harness, carrier or crate.
- Never let pets roam freely while driving – it’s unsafe for them and can distract the driver.
- Keep their lead, collar, and ID tag easily accessible in case of emergencies or quick stops.
- New surroundings can be unpredictable, even for well-trained pets. Make sure fences and gates are secure before letting them off-lead.
7. Keep your caravan clean
Things can get messy quickly in a small space, so having a cleaning routine goes a long way when pets are involved.
- Use wipeable mats or seat covers over bedding and seating.
- Pack a quick-dry towel for muddy paws or unexpected dips.
- Use a portable pet shower or pop-up bath after long, dusty walks.
