How to Look After Your Caravan Mattress

  • 3rd April 2025

So, you’ve scrubbed the exterior of your caravan, emptied the cupboards, and hoovered up, but what else is left to do to refresh your vehicle before summer? One of the most essential stages in spring cleaning your caravan or motorhome often gets overlooked—cleaning your caravan or motorhome bed. Unlike standard household mattresses, caravan mattresses are often awkwardly shaped, making them harder to flip and turn. This is why a thorough clean is crucial to maintaining a fresh, hygienic, and comfortable sleep environment as well as increasing the longevity of your mattress.

Why Cleaning Your Caravan Mattress Matters

A clean mattress means better hygiene and a better night’s sleep. Over time, dust mites, dead skin cells, and accidental spills can build up, creating an unhygienic and uncomfortable sleeping surface. Regularly cleaning your caravan mattress and motorhome mattress helps eliminate allergens, which reduces the risk of irritation and ensuring you wake up feeling refreshed.

How to Spring Clean Your Caravan Mattress

Follow our step-by-step guide to keep your motorhome or caravan bed in pristine condition.

1. Strip Your Caravan Bedding

Start by removing all of your bedding, including your mattress protector, caravan bed sheets, and pillows. Wash your motorhome bed sheets according to the care instructions on the label.

Top Tip: Caravan bedding should be washed more frequently than home bedding. While washing every 1-2 weeks is recommended for household use, it’s best to wash your caravan bed sheets after every trip and store them in a dry place to prevent musty odours.

When Should You Replace Your Caravan Bedding?

As you strip the bed, check your caravan mattress protector and sheets for signs of wear. Look out for thinning fabric, holes, or discolouration. Mattress protectors generally last 1-2 years, depending on usage, while sheets should be replaced when they become visibly worn or faded.

2. Vacuum Your Caravan Mattress

Over time, dust and debris collect on your caravan mattress, so it’s important to hoover the surface thoroughly. Use circular motions and go over the mattress multiple times to pick up as much dust as possible.

Top Tip: If your vacuum cleaner has an upholstery attachment, use it to lift dirt more effectively without damaging the motorhome mattress fibres.

Watch Out: If you have a natural fillings mattress, it is important to skip this step as the hoover can disturb the integrity of the fillings, making your motorhome mattress lumpy and uncomfortable.

3. Spot Clean Any Marks on your Motorhome Mattress

Inspect your caravan mattress for any stains that need attention. If you spot any marks, use one of the following methods to clean them. Avoid using too much moisture, as this can encourage mould growth—particularly on memory foam mattresses.

Recommended Cleaning Solutions to Spot Clean your Caravan Mattress:

  • Hydrogen Peroxide: Mix a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution with water in a spray bottle. Lightly spray the stain on your caravan mattress, then blot it with a clean microfibre cloth, and allow to dry.
  • Upholstery Cleaner: Use a fabric-safe upholstery cleaner on stubborn caravan mattress stains according to the instructions on the bottle, but always test it on a small, hidden area first.
  • Vinegar & Baking Soda: Create a paste with white vinegar and baking soda, apply it to the motorhome mattress stain, and leave it for a few hours. Once the paste is dry, brush off the residue and vacuum the mattress.

4. Deodorise Your Caravan Mattress

To keep your caravan mattress smelling fresh, sprinkle a light layer of baking soda over the entire surface. Leave it to sit for several hours (or overnight if possible), then vacuum it up to remove odours and moisture.

With just a little effort, you can keep your caravan or motorhome bed in top condition, ensuring a clean and comfortable place to rest after a day of adventure.
