Getting lost, getting found – Linda’s European motorhome adventure

  • 7th January 2026

Retirement goals? Linda and Gerard are living them. With their Benimar Mileo and the open road ahead, they’ve set off not once, but twice on extended European motorhome adventures. And from sleepy French villages to dramatic Spanish dead-ends, their stories are as wild as they are inspiring.

“We love the freedom of it,” Linda told us. “You can explore wherever you want, whenever you want. It’s like taking home on the road.”

The dream becomes reality

The dream was always to travel. Once retired, the couple didn’t waste any time. “It’s so easy,” said Linda. “Get in your motorhome and go. Don’t have a plan. Just go.”

At first, she admits, the lack of planning was nerve-wracking. But that fear faded fast. Their first trip had just one night pre-booked in Calais. After that? They were winging it.

Favourite spots and local surprises

So far, France, Germany, and Spain top their list. The key? Avoiding the cities. “Go rural,” says Linda. “You see the real culture and real lifestyle that way.”

And sometimes, the real lifestyle includes a few surprises.

Like the day they got stuck in a tiny street in Malaga. Following the sat nav down a cobbled road, they found themselves facing a dead end with no room to turn around. Thankfully, locals came out in force to help them reverse their motorhome back up the hill.

“They were amazing,” said Linda. “Really friendly people.”

Then there was the great rally drive moment. Trying to get back up a steep hill, Gerard had to floor it. “The back end was flying out. I was screaming and holding on for dear life,” Linda laughed. “I’ve never needed a drink more in my life.”

Lessons from the road

Linda quickly discovered the must-haves for a comfy road trip: a Dyson fan (or a neck fan when off-grid), a satellite dish for entertainment, and, of course, a good motorhome mattress

Another pro tip? Flies are everywhere. Bring all the bug spray, repellents, swats, and bite creams you can find.

Apps also played a major role. For finding free aires and cheaper campsites, they made travelling seamless.

Chill, don’t stress

Linda’s number one piece of advice for new motorhomers is simple: relax. “Everyone waves, everyone wants to help each other. Chill and enjoy. There’s no need to worry.”
