How to make your caravan feel more homely

  • 13th June 2024

Would you like your caravan or motorhome to feel more cosy and homely? The neutral colour schemes can lack a homely charm that can stop you from feeling relaxed while away on your adventures.

The good news is that with a few simple additions, you can transform your caravan into something that truly resembles a home away from home. We’ve written this guide to give you some inspiration on the personal touches you can add to transform your home away from home. We’d love to hear how you have made your caravan or motorhome feel more homely.

1. Think about your caravan accessories

Expand your space with a caravan awning:

One of the biggest challenges in a caravan can be feeling cramped. To avoid this, consider investing in an awning – it’s a great way to open up your living space. An awning provides extra covered living space, perfect for relaxing outdoors, even when the weather isn’t great. This additional space allows you to spread out and truly unwind, making your caravan feel less like a confined space and more like a versatile base. Awnings themselves are usually neglected when it comes to decorating. By accessorising your awning with soft furnishings, such as rugs, chairs and bean bags, you can quickly and easily bring a cosier atmosphere to your extra space.

Dim the lights:

Harsh overhead lighting can feel clinical and uninviting. Choose soft lighting solutions to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, especially in the evenings, like string fairy lights across the ceiling or around windows. Strategically placed lamps with warm white bulbs can create pockets of light for reading and relaxing. Consider using dimmer switches on existing overhead lights to give you more control over the ambience.

Personalise your caravan or motorhome:

Cushions, throws, rugs, and even doormats can add a splash of colour and personality to the typically neutral colour schemes in caravans and motorhomes. Think about colour palettes that evoke a sense of comfort and relaxation for you. Colours like soft blues and greens are recommended for their calming properties, which can help create a soothing atmosphere in your caravan. However, you might prefer a colour with warm hues, like muted oranges and yellows to balance the cold, grey decor often found in caravans and motorhomes.

Aswell as colour, when adding soft furnishings to your caravan, it is also worth thinking about textures. Things like plush throws and blankets or fluffy rugs and cushions will help make your caravan feel cosier.

Here’s a top tip: collect these items over time so they have significance to you. Something like a tartan blanket from Scotland or an ornament from a landmark you have visited are great ways to incorporate your adventures into your caravan interior.

It is also important to think about your motorhome or caravan bedding. You will spend almost a third of your adventures in bed, so ensuring it’s as comfortable as your bed at home will instantly make your caravan or motorhome feel cosier.

Upgrade your caravan mattress:

A good night’s sleep is essential for enjoying your caravan adventures to the fullest. Don’t sacrifice comfort on the road – make sure you have the best mattress for your needs. The right level of support and comfort from your caravan mattress is crucial to ensure your adventures are as cosy as possible. Opt for a custom-made mattress for your caravan or motorhome to confirm it will fit your specific shape and size.

2. Make your caravan feel like home

Bring familiar utensils along in your caravan:

Pack your favourite mugs, plates, and cutlery. Using familiar tableware can make mealtimes feel more homely and enjoyable. Think about the mugs you use for your morning coffee at home or the plates you enjoy your favourite meals on. Using these familiar pieces can create a sense of comfort, even when you’re miles away from your usual routine.

Prep your meals ahead of time:

Save precious time on the road by preparing meals ahead of time. Batch cooking or prepping ingredients before your trip allows you to quickly whip up delicious and nutritious meals in your caravan. This not only saves time and money, but it also means less stress and more time spent relaxing and enjoying your adventure.

Keep yourself entertained in your motorhome:

Pack board games for fun evenings in, download movies onto tablets for the kids (or yourself), or even bring a portable TV to keep everyone entertained during downtime. Make sure you think about the layout and size of your caravan or motorhome when deciding on which entertainment options to bring. For example, if space is limited, bring things like playing cards or other small items.

Use a familiar scent:

Recreate the way your home smells with plug-in air fresheners or reed diffusers. Avoid candles due to fire hazards and the potential for inhalation issues in a small, enclosed space. Instead, consider diffusers with essential oils like lavender for relaxation, or citrus for a touch of invigorating freshness.

Quick tips to make your caravan more homely

Remember, the key to creating a cosy haven is all about the details.

Here are some finishing touches to consider:

Fresh flowers or greenery:

A small artificial plant can add a touch of life and colour to your caravan, while also avoiding any spills from a real plant.

Books and magazines:

Pack your favourite books and magazines to create a dedicated reading nook. Curling up with a good book is a great way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Organise and declutter:

A cluttered space can feel overwhelming. Invest in storage solutions like baskets, bins, and hooks to keep things organised and minimise clutter. This will not only make your caravan feel more spacious, but also make it easier to find what you need.
