Sleeping in your Caravan or Motorhome isn’t always the easiest thing to do. With the neighbours enjoying their 3rd bottle of wine and wind putting your awnings’ strength rating to the test, it’s not always the easiest place to ensure a great night’s sleep. However, we have a couple of top tips listed below in order to answer the question, how to sleep better in your caravan (or motorhome).

Top Tip #1 Make Sure Your Surroundings are Totally Dark.

Take yourself back a thousand years ago, before the time of light pollution and the only light at night was the stars in the sky. Imagine if it was that easy nowadays to get to sleep without the concern of the light flooding in through your windows. Is this a problem that occurs when you’re trying to catch some Z’s, then maybe it’s time you invest in some black out blinds which you can easily install, or even just a simple sleep mask? Think about how much your sleep would improve if you manage to cut out all the outside light. However, this does mean that just because you’ve cut out the light from outside that it’s a wise idea to have it inside of your caravan or motorhome. Yep, that means putting down those phones or tablets. We all know about devices emitting blue-light which disrupts the body’s natural sleep cycle, so don’t disturb your sleep even more, especially after putting up those black out blinds!

Top Tip #2 Choose a Quiet Site.

No-one enjoys being woken up in the middle of the night from other people’s loud clanking of them tidying up their late night BBQ or socialising which has gone on just a bit too long. If sleep is important to you, or you’re a light sleeper and are woken up easily by noise, I would suggest choosing a quiet site for you to pitch up at to ensure yourself a peaceful night’s sleep. Maybe even just try and pitch up further away from other people if you find it might be a little bit too noisy for your liking. However, if this is not possible, it might be a good idea to invest in a white noise machine which uses sound to minimise ambient noise. Though, if this is not an option, it might be wise to always travel with a set of ear plugs.

Top Tip #3 Upgrade Your Sheets or Pillows.

You might think that your sheets and pillows are okay, you’ve had them for a few years now and they’re trustworthy. This might not be the case, always make sure you’re changing your pillows every 1 to 2 years. Trust me, you’ll have a much better sleep if you have a pillow without lumps and the filling is evenly distributed. A lot of people also tend to use old or worn out sheets from their house because it’s convenient. However, this doesn’t mean that the sheet fits flush with your mattress in the caravan and motorhome, and we know you’ll have a restless night’s sleep, as no-one enjoys it when your sheet comes off your mattress or rides up the duvet cover. Make sure you treat yourself to some new pillows and sheets to ensure yourselves a lush nights sleep that you deserve.

Top Tip #4 Make Sure Your Mattress Is Supportive, Not Too Soft Or Too Firm.

What’s the point in investing thousands of pounds on a mattress for your home, just to then skimp, or “make-do”, with your mattress in the Caravan or Motorhome. The whole premise of a Caravan or Motorhome is enjoying a “home away from home” and if you can’t bring the luxuries of your home with you, then there is little point in leaving at all. Even worse, we find a lot of our customers end up resenting the idea of using their van just because they know that it is going to lead to a sore back and complete lack of sleep. If your mattress falls in this bracket, thankfully there is a solution. By purchasing a Memory Foam Topper which is custom-sized for your mattress, an overly firm mattress will become significantly softer and subsequently provide much more comfort than the existing bed. Additionally, you could even go the whole hog and replace the whole mattress. We supply a wide variety of mattresses to meet all budgets and requirements, meaning that if you want to holiday in style, we have something for you!

Top Tip #5 Control That Temperature.

Vans have long been fitted with the ability to control the temperature within. With insulation radically improving in the last 10 years, it’s incredibly easy to make your van feel all snug and cosy! However, did you know that the ideal temperature to have your bedroom is roughly 18 degrees? Our body temperatures can drop a few degrees at night, so whether it’s warm or cold outside the van, maybe crack up the A/C or blast that central heating to achieve the required temperature. Finally, if you are somebody who gets particularly warm at night, make sure to maximise the amount of 100% cotton you use. Natural fibres breathe significantly better than their polyester counterparts, so if you often wake up feeling a bit sweaty and sticky during the night, switching to a natural alternative like Feather and Down Duvets, or 100% cotton Fitted Sheets and Duvet Covers, can make all the difference in getting a fantastic night’s sleep!
